Today, mobility stakeholders from across Europe reached an agreement on the needs and requirements for developing and deploying cooperative intelligent transport services (C-ITS) in eight major European cities and regions. Stakeholders reviewed the solutions available at a workshop in Bilbao, Spain, organised by the C-MobILE project (Accelerating C-ITS Mobility Innovation and depLoyment in Europe) consortium and its local actors with the aim of developing applications and solutions to deal with specific urban transport challenges.
Participants at the workshop were presented with 35 use cases for 20 C-ITS services developed by the project consortium, and defined around 450 requirements for large-scale C-ITS implementation in Europe. Transport experts and stakeholders reviewed these findings and provided valuable input to the methodology being used as well as the validation of the results achieved by the C-MobILE consortium to develop new and bespoke C-ITS services.
C-ITS services are being deployed across Europe in cities like Bilbao which provide valuable transport information to road users such as parking availability information, blind-spot detection for cyclists, roadworks warning and traffic flow notifications. All of this information is already available to road network and transport actors.
C-MobILE is a European project carrying out large-scale deployment of cooperative intelligent transport services designed to deal with mobility challenges across Europe. The main objective of the project is to support local authorities deploying the C-ITS services they need and to engage with various stakeholders and road users by assessing benefits against costs.
This was the goal of today’s workshop which brought together public authorities, end-users and key mobility stakeholders to validate business models, use cases, and technical and non-technical requirements for C-ITS implementations, as well as to discuss various new services and potential “bundles” of services. By bringing key transport and mobility stakeholders around the same table, the C-MobILE project intends to establish strong partnerships, both within the consortium and beyond, and ultimately achieve sustainable large-scale deployments of C-ITS services.

About C-MobILE
C-MobILE (Accelerating C-ITS Mobility Innovation and depLoyment in Europe) is 42 month project (June 2017 – November 2020) comprised of 37 consortium partners from across Europe. The project is deploying cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) and services designed to deal with specific mobility challenges across Europe. The project also aims to help local authorities deploy the C-ITS services they need and to raise awareness of the potential benefits for all road users.
A total of eight C-ITS equipped cities and regions are involved in the project, all of which have been research pilot sites for large-scale deployment of sustainable services in the past. This common approach ensures that interoperability and seamless service availability are prioritised and at an acceptable cost for end-users.
C-MobILE is engaging with public and private stakeholders, including end-users, to enhance C-ITS services and to establish functioning partnerships beyond the project. It is also carrying out cost-benefit analyses and developing business models, particularly from the end-user’s perspective, to make sure C-ITS services do their job correctly.
